A Song

Music produces a kind
of pleasure which human
nature cannot do without.

I listen to music every day.  I finally came into the 21st century and bought an iPod and a Bose docking station, so I’m either listening to Pandora Radio or the songs on my iPod.  Most of the time it is background while I’m at the computer, cooking, knitting, moodling….  The sad truth is that I seldom just sit back and listen to the music.  However, when I’m at the gym, on the treadmill it’s a different story.  It doesn’t take much concentration to put one foot in front of the other, so I can give the artists my focused attention and LISTEN.    The other day when I was on the treadmill, lost in my own little world, a James Taylor song came on – a song that touches my heart and makes me smile every time I hear it.  It’s like a little wake-up call, “the secret of life is enjoying the passage of time.”  I want to share it with you.  It’s a simple, beautiful song with a good message.  It reminds me of the Dalai Lama quote, “The purpose of our lives is to be happy.”

I have listened to James Taylor since the 70’s and it wasn’t until recently, while I was listening to Pandora Radio, that I heard this song.  Of course there’s the possibility that I heard it before, being that the song was on an album he recorded in 1977, but I don’t remember it.  It isn’t played often on Pandora, in fact, I don’t think I’ve heard it but that once on the radio; however, I did download it to my iPod so I can listen to it when I need to be reminded to stop sweating the small stuff, go with the flow, and enjoy this amazing life I live. We’ve all had to face great challenges in our lives, but it seems to me we often make our lives more difficult than they need be, and we look at time as the enemy.  For those of you who might need a reminder once in a while to slow down and enjoy the moment, I suggest you listen to this song.   Some of you probably know the song.  Susan, I’m sure you do, being the James Taylor fan that you are.  For those of you who haven’t heard it,  go to YouTube to listen and watch James perform this beautiful song.  Enjoy the song.  Enjoy life!

Secret O’ Life

The secret of life is enjoying the passage of time
Any fool can do it
There ain’t nothing to it
Nobody knows how we got to
The top of the hill
But since we’re on our way down
We might as well enjoy the ride

The secret of love is in opening your heart
It’s okay to feel afraid
But don’t let that stand in your way
’cause anyone knows that love is the only road
And since we’re only here for a while
Might as well show some style
Give us a smile

Isn’t it a lovely ride
Sliding down
Gliding down
Try not to try too hard
It’s just a lovely ride

Now the thing about time is that time
Isn’t really real
It’s just your point of view
How does it feel for you
Einstein said he could never understand it all
Planets spinning through space
The smile upon your face
Welcome to the human race

Some kind of lovely ride
I’ll be sliding down
I’ll be gliding down
Try not to try too hard
It’s just a lovely ride

Isn’t it a lovely ride
Sliding down
Gliding down
Try not to try to hard
It’s just a lovely ride

Now the secret of life is enjoying the passage of time.

You are the music while the music lasts.
~T. S. Eliot~

Music is the language of the spirit.
It opens the secret of life bringing
peace, abolishing strife.
~Kahil Gibran~

If you can walk you can dance.
If you can talk you can sing.
~Zimbabwe Proverb~

Let’s dance and sing today, and celebrate this
“one wild and precious life we have.”
