Exploring the Inner Landscape

I am back home in Seattle after a week with my family in Racine, Wisconsin.  As usual, upon returning from time spent with family in the city where I grew up, I am in a reflective mood.  Although I say it’s where I grew up, in truth it is the place where I started the process of growing up.   Joseph Campbell said, “The privilege of a lifetime is being who you are”, and for many of us, it takes a lifetime to become that person! Every day we are presented with lessons and opportunities for growth, and often  these lessons have to be presented to us over and over again until we can finally look into the mirror and see who we really are.

Yesterday, while browsing in a Barnes and Noble bookstore, I came across “If LIFE is a GAME, THESE are the RULES” written by Cherie Carter-Scott, Ph.D. This book is used as a text in 100 university and colleges in the United States.  These rules were first introduced in the original “Chicken Soup for the Soul”, which was published in 1993 so I imagine most of you have read them at least once; however, I think they are worth reading again.  I believe we all need guidance and nourishment to reach our fullest potential and become who we were born to be. Whether it’s a good friend who provides support, or a few written words that inspire us, help is everywhere. We just have to look, listen and stay open.

TEN RULES FOR BEING HUMAN

YOU WILL RECEIVE A BODY.  You may love it or hate it, but it will be yours for the duration of your life on Earth.

YOU WILL BE PRESENTED WITH LESSONS.  You are enrolled in a full-time informal school called “life.” Every day in this school you will have the opportunity to learn lessons.  You may like the lessons or hate them, but you have designed them as part of your curriculum.

THERE ARE NO MISTAKES, ONLY LESSONS.  Growth is a process of experimentation, a series of trials, errors, and occasional victories.  The failed experiments are as much a part of the process as the experiments that work.

A LESSON IS REPEATED UNTIL LEARNED.  Lessons will be repeated to you in various forms until you have learned them. When you have learned them, you can go on to the next lesson.

LEARNING DOES NOT END.  There is no part of life that does not contain lessons.  If you are alive, there are lessons to be learned.

“THERE” IS NO BETTER THAN “HERE.”  When your “there” has become a “here,” you will simply obtain a “there” that will look better to you than the present “here.”

OTHERS ARE ONLY MIRRORS OF YOU.  You cannot love or hate something about another person unless it reflects something you love or hate about yourself.

WHAT YOU MAKE OF YOUR LIFE IS UP TO YOU.  You have all the tools and resources you need.  What you do with them is up to you.

YOUR ANSWERS LIE INSIDE OF YOU.  All you need to do is look, listen and trust.

YOU WILL FORGET ALL OF THIS AT BIRTH.  You can remember it if you want by unraveling the double helix of inner knowing.

Great topic – I think we forget it every time we wake up and have to learn it every day.
