Blue Moon

Seattle has had  forty consecutive days without rain – hallelujah!!  Last night’s sky was clear enough for us to experience the blue moon in all her splendor.  It truly was an exquisite evening.

In case you don’t know, a blue moon is the second full moon in a calendar month.  The average lunar cycle is 29.53 days so a blue moon is very rare, hence the term “once in a blue moon”.  The last blue moon was seen in December 2009 and the next will be in July 2015.

I love the song Blue Moon which was written by Rodgers and Hart in 1934.  The recording I remember best is the one done by the doo-wop group, The Marcels in 1961.  According to  Wikipedia it is featured in the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame’s ‘500 Songs that Shaped Rock and Roll’.
